Christmas is rapidly approaching and you’ll certainly need to start thinking about the holiday season and all that it entails. This is especially true if you have children, either at home with you or elsewhere in your life. One of the more popular traditions that is gaining traction today is Elf on the Shelf. What is it? Well, for those that do not know, consider the following information as a guide for you to possibly incorporate this great idea and concept into your family’s Christmas celebrations this coming year!
What Is Elf on the Shelf?
The tradition that is Elf on the Shelf is based on a children’s picture book that was self-published in 2005 by an American author named Carol Aabersold and her daughter Chanda Bell. Coe Steinwart illustrated it. Not surprisingly, the book tells a story that is themed around Christmas, and it is set to a rhyme. What makes the book so special is that is describes to everyone how Santa Claus ends up knowing who is naughty and nice, and it works to explain the process that the elves play in the Holiday season. The elves are to visit kids everywhere sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve. Once their job is done, they will return to the North Pole to rest up for the next Christmas season 11 months away. The book itself comes with a small toy that is soft and forms the basis for the pixie scout elf character.
Where to Put your Elf on the Shelf
So, the question is, do you have an Elf on the Shelf? If so, where do you put it? There are many positions to hide and place your elf on the shelf, but remember that nobody is supposed to touch it. In fact, the rules state that, “There’s only rule that you have to follow, so I will come back and be here tomorrow: Please do not touch me. My magic might go, and Santa won’t hear all I’ve seen or I know.” What is great about this idea, however, is that families are welcome to talk to the elf and tell it all of their Christmas wishes. This, of course, is great fun as the children get really involved in making sure that elf knows exactly what is going on so they will give a proper accounting to Santa Claus prior to the big day.
The magic of Elf on a Shelf is that it brings family tradition back into the holiday season. This seems to have been lost in recent years. With this concept, however, there is something for the entire family to look forward to each season, and everyone can get involved. The elf is truly magical. You are encouraged to get the book. It is well made and durable, so it should last you for many years. Read it together with your family. Decide together where to put the elf and then watch it work its magic season after season. Most importantly, get creative and have lots of fun- this might just become a family tradition for years to come!
